10. Captain America: Civil War
This post credits scene shows the winter soldier being refrozen so that he can’t be controlled into attacking someone again. It then zooms out to show some of Wakanda. This is shown to make people even more excited for the Black Panther movie.
9. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
This post credits scene introduces quicksilver and scarlet witch to the MCU. Due to Fox having the rights to the x-men these characters are described as miracles instead of mutants. This is shown to build up anticipation for Avengers: Age of Ultron.
8. Thor: The Dark World
Sif and Volstagg take the Aether to the collector so that there are not two infinity stones in Asgard. The collector then says, “One down five to go”. This is shown in order to connect Thor to the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
7. The Incredible Hulk
Tony Stark meets with General Ross in a bar. This helps the audience know that the Hulk and Iron Man are in the same world, since this was still when the MCU was relatively new.
Dr. Erik Selvig from Thor meets Nick Fury and is shown the Tesseract from the first Captain America movie. We then see that Loki is controlling the doctor so that he can return in the Avengers movie.
5. Iron Man 2
Phil Coulson from shield is on the phone and he says that he found it. We also see that there is a large crater caused by Thor’s hammer. This helped to build up anticipation for Thor.
4. Doctor Strange
Dr. Strange and Thor are sitting down and talking to each other. Thor says that him and Loki are searching for their father. Dr. Strange offers to help if it means that Loki will leave earth. We also see a funny moments as Dr. Strange uses magic to keep refilling Thor’s beer. This revealed that Dr. Strange is going to make an appearance in Thor: Ragnarok.
3. Avengers: Age of Ultron
Thanos reaches for the empty infinity gauntlet and says, “fine I’ll do it myself”. This is a reference to his previous attempts to get others to get the infinity stones for him. For example in the Avengers he sends Loki to get the Tesseract and in Guardians of the Galaxy he tries to get Ronan to get the Power Stone for him. This helps to connect Avengers: Age of Ultron to the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War movie.
2. Iron Man
This was the very first MCU post credit scene and I’m sure that many people missed it in theaters. Nick Fury shows up on Tony Stark’s desk and tells him that he is not the only hero. This helped to set the standard for the rest of the post credit scenes and to set up each of the other Avengers’ solo movies.
1. The Avengers
This scene shows the Other who had previously instructed Loki during the Avengers movie saying that to challenge the Avengers is to court death. Then Thanos turns around and smiles. This is the first time that we see Thanos in the MCU and it plants the seed for us seeing him many years later in Avengers: Infinity War. It is also a reference to the comics where Thanos kills many people to try to impress the representation of death.
